Hallux valgus (HV), also known as a bunion, is one of the most common forefoot deformities. It manifests with the proximal phalanx deviating laterally and the first metatarsal head deviating medially. It is usually due to the adduction of the first metatarsus, called metatarsus primus varus.
Bunions (Hallux Valgus) Pressure from the way you walk or your foot shape can cause a bunion, a painful bony lump on the outside of the big toe. Narrow shoes and standing for long periods can make bunion pain worse. If bunion pads, toe spacers and better-fitting shoes don't help, you may need surgery (a bunionectomy).

拇外翻畸形是指拇趾在第一跖趾关节处向外侧偏斜移位。拇外翻是一种复杂的解剖畸形，并且在治疗上极具挑战性。拇囊是指在拇外翻畸形中出现的明显的内侧突起，但一般情况下这两个名词可互换使用。拇外翻是累及拇趾的最常见的病变，多见于中老年妇女，最常发生在有遗传倾向加上长时间穿不合适的鞋子的人，不合适的鞋子会对拇趾施加异常压力。
拇囊炎是一种由非自然的撞击或骨骼弯曲所致的拇疾病，在大拇趾的起始部形成隆起。结果导致肿胀，有时使大拇趾踺内翻垂直到另外的脚趾上，相似的情况如果发生在小趾称为小拇囊炎。 因为拇囊炎发生部位在走路时拇趾需要弯曲的关节，故在每一步行走时你的整个身体重量都压在它上面。然而大多数拇囊炎不影响正常行走，但它可导致极度疼痛。
