正月初九这天，在我国东南沿海一带，尤其是闽南地区，有一个特别盛行且隆重的民间习俗，这就是“拜天公”。正月初九俗称天公生，中国传统农历节日之一。是天界最高神祇玉皇大帝的诞辰，天公就是玉皇大帝，是主宰三界最高的神，他是统领三界内外十方诸神以及人间万灵的最高神，代表至高无上的天。这一天的传统民俗，妇女多备清香花烛、斋碗，摆在天井巷口露天地方膜拜苍天，求天公赐福，寄托了中国劳动人民一种祛邪、避灾、祈福的美好愿望。同时，福建民间信仰认为正月初九也是闽越王无诸的诞辰。而四川达州民间则把正月初九当日视为元九登高节。
